Monorail? What's a monorail?

The Walt Disney World Resort Monorail System is a public transit system in operation at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.  One of the most famous symbols of the Walt Disney World Resort, this two-track, 14-mile “highway in the sky” has six public stations as well as a backstage service hangar.  The system has been in operation since 1971. In 1982, the system was expanded with a four-mile extension to Epcot.

They’re built by Bombardier.  Today’s system, which debuted in 1990, has eleven trains.  Each is 203 feet long, has six cars, eight 113 hp motors and can carry 360 passengers.  Top speed is 72 kph.  They’re powered by a 600-volt electrical system which feeds current through a metal bar mounted along a 26-inch-wide concrete beam.  Motors turn tires that roll along the top of the beam; horizontal stabilizing wheels hug its sides.
Walt Disney World Resort Guests travel via monorail on three routes:

Express: Express service between the Magic Kingdom Park and the Transportation and Ticket Center.
Resort: Local service making stops at the Magic Kingdom Park, Disney's Contemporary Resort, the Transportation and Ticket Center, Disney's Polynesian Resort and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.
Epcot: Service between the Transportation and Ticket Center and Epcot.

There are only three Disney Resorts offering direct monorail access to the Magic Kingdom Park; Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Polynesian Resort and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.
Each train is identified by a colored stripe, and given a name according to that color: Red, Coral, Orange, Gold, Yellow, Lime, Green, Blue, Teal, Silver and Black.
Monorails run one hour prior to Disney Theme Park opening time and up to 3 hours after Disney Theme Park closing time.
